At Rest

Died, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Ditson, Mrs. Anna Snyder late of Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Snyder was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1843. She leaves four children, Mrs. Ditson of Galena, Mrs. Mary Graf of Los Angeles, Wm. and Jacob Snyder [Styner] of Washington state, father, mother, sisters and brothers all preceded the deceased to spirit life.

Mrs. Snyder had a varied life, traveled extensively and made friends. wherever she went. She gave up her husband when his country called, left as many others were, to battle with two children to the early war times, she bore the trials of a soldier's wife bravely. The husband was lost with others who were blown up when the steamer, the New Sultana, loaded with soldiers and supplies, was blown up with the loss of nearly three thousand men who "failed to reach the shore".

Mrs. Snyder united with the First Spiritualist church of Kansas City a number of years ago. Rev. Sara Scovell her pastor then as now, by request Mrs. Scovell held the funeral services assisted by the W. R. C. of Galena of which order Mrs. Snyder was a member.

Biographical Notes:
Anna Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward and Margaret Haggerty Guilford.

Anna was first married to Martin L. Rice, who was the native-born Pennsylvania soldier who died on April 27, 1865, in the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. He had been captured by the Confederate forces and imprisoned at Andersonville and at the close of the war was being returned home when the boat, the Sultana, on which he was being transported exploded and killed thousands. Anna filed for a widow's pension in 1899 for Martin L. Rice.

Their daughters were Marguerite Elizabeth Rice Ditson, who died in 1921, wife of Allen Ditson, and Mary Lavina Rice Thomas Wood.

Mary married William M Eakins about 1880, and they had one daughter, Maude Anna Eakins Volk Hansen, who died in 1937.

Mary then married Thomas John Thomas, who died in 1904, and after his death married Andrew Jackson Wood on or about December 14, 1914, in Sausalito, Marin County, California, where the groom was from, the bride being from San Francisco. Mary died in 1925.

It is not clear whether Anna thought Martin had died or if they separated, but there is a record that Anna E. Rice married Jacob Styner on February 26, 1865 in Lee County, Iowa. Jacob was considerably older than Anna. They had a son born to them in the 1870 census at Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa, William, whose age was given as 4 in that census. Anna was living with William's family in the 1900 census at Galena in 1900, where his birth was given as December 1865 in Iowa. According to his Findagrave memorial, Jacob Styner died in May 1880, and is buried at Fort Madison. He is buried next to his first wife, Lucretia. Anna and Jacob also had a daughter, Louisa, born about 1871, and another son, James William Styner, born about 1872.

In Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa, Anna married a Swede, named August Peter Sandquist?, on September 12, 1882. It is not known what happened to August, and his last name had several slightly different spellings--Linquist, Sanquist, Sanoquist, etc.

Her last husband was Samuel R. Snyder, to whom she was married in Jackson County, Missouri, on March 6, 1887. Samuel's first wife, Martha, remained with him until his last child was married and out of the home, and then she left. They divorced in 1882.

In a narrative written about Samuel's life, Anna was noted: "After Martha left, he went to Kansas City and met Annie E. Lanquist [sic] (born 1842) [sic: 1843] and they were married 6 Mar 1887 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri. Annie had been married to Martin L. Rice and they had 2 children. Martin died in 1865, then she married Jacob Styner but he also died. Annie was one person Samuel could not rule. She was good to him but she sure ruled his money and drinking. He took sick and John came to see him and met his wife, Annie, for the first time. He said she was a respectable woman and sure knew how to rule his father."

By 1900, Anna was living with her son William Alexander Styner in Galena. One curious thing is that she was listed as having given birth to only one living child, although her obituary lists 4 surviving children. In that census, her name is clearly Snyder, and her son and his family's last name is clearly Styner. Her son William married Ida Groff in 1888, was divorced in 1902, and Ida died at the Allen Ditson home in 1904. William would marry two more times.
