He was the son of Philip and Catharina Barbara (Hummel) Schneider/Snider. Samuel married Martha Whicker March 12, 1844 Stokes County, North Carolina. Their children were: Mary Ann Elizabeth, James Francis, Eli Edward, John Wesley, Sarah Caroline, Samuel Renotis, Sylvester Sawyer, and Marthta Antha Snyder. The family resided in North Carolina until 1848, when they moved to Bartholomew County Indiana. In 1856 they moved to Iowa, and homesteaded in Davis County. During the Civil War, Samuel served as a 1st Sergeant in Company I, 3rd Iowa Cavalry and later was promoted to Brevet Lieutenant. He then was promoted to Captain of the 2nd Regiment Arkansas Volunteers of African Descent.
