Joseph V Sisler was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. At some time he moved to Minnesota and worked a farm in the Faribault area. On Aug 29, 1861, he volunteered to serve his country. He was 28 years old and stood 5' 9" tall. He had a dark complexion, black eyes and black hair.

He fought in the battles of Fair Oaks, Seven Days Battles and Antietam. The regimental roster indicates that he was killed on July 3, 1863, though company records put his death as July 2nd. This Pennsylvania born soldier now rests in his native soil. He is buried at the Gettysburg National Cemetery, in the section reserved for the men from the First Minnesota, Section A, Grave #1.
