Joseph Doty died at his home in Mifflin Township last Wednesday evening after a protracted illness, at the age of 78 years. He was born in Virginia in 1812 and came with his parents to this county (then Richland) in the year of 1816 or when he was a lad four years of age.

His parents settled in Milton Township where he grew to manhood and where he was subject to the privations of pioneer life. After arriving at age he purchased a densely timbered farm in which he cleared and improved, and by economy and industry added to it until he had 160 acres of fine land and commodious home, on which he continuously resided 52 years.

In 1838 he married Rachel Lambright and to them were born eight children, three of whom have preceeded him to the spirit land. He was an exemplary christian man having been a member of the Presbyterian Church at Mifflin up to the time it disbanded, then united with the Evangelical Lutheran, of which he was a faithful member to the time he died.

In politics he was an uncompromising democrat. He voted for Jackson in 1832 and for every subsequent democratic candidate. He was honored by his party in several instances, having been elected Justice of the Peace in his township for several terms

Four of his children live in Indiana, but one, Mrs. Aten, living near his home

His funeral occured last Saturday at the Lutheran Church in Mifflinm Rev. Smith officiating.
