In the book, The Doty-Doten Family in America: descendants of Edward Doty, an Emigrant By The Mayflower, by Ethan Allen Doty, pub. 1897, James Doty is person #4086, His entry, on page 401:


4086. JAMES DOTY, son of Abram Doty and Mary Dunbar, born, Brooke Co., W. Va., Sept. 5, 1803; married Ashland Co., O., Sarah Croninger, daughter of Leonard Croninger and his wife, Mary. He died near Mifflin, O. She died some years before. At 12 years of age he removed with his father from West Virginia to Ashland Co., and made his home near Mifflin. He was a popular man, a successful farmer and fo on term was sheriff of the county.

5228. ii. Luther, b. Richland Co., O., Aug 15, 1826.

5229. iii. Abram, lived in Shelby, Ia., 1886.

5230. iv. Leonard, went to California, enlisted there and was sent to Salt Lake City, where he died during the War of the Rebellion; not married.

5231. v. Martha, m. Robert Briggs; their only child died; they lived Shelby, 1886.

5232. vi. Mary, m. Henry Vanderlip; lived Oxford, Ia., 1886.

5233. vii. Melinda, m. William Morton; lived Harrison Co., Ia., 1886.

5234. viii. Calvin, b. Mifflin, April 11, 1832.

5235. ix. Peter, b. Mifflin, Nov. 11, 1846.

5236. x. A child, d. infancy.
