He married Olive Oveda Boxx 12 Oct 1943 in Jacksonville, FL. This couple had the following children: Garland Edward, Donald Gene, Michael Allen, Richard William and Phyllis Annette.

Garland served in the U. S. Navy during WWII as an ordinance man. He worked as a Field Layout Supervisor for Montogmery Wards for 30 years. He then worked as a project manager for the construction arm of the May Company. Then worked for Ryan Associates before working for himself as a project manager.

Garland died in Hazel Crest, IL on 5 Jul 1988 and was buried in Skyline Memorial Park, Monee, IL.
