James Zebulin Baird, 89, passed away at the Golden Spread Nursing Home in Shamrock, Thurs. June 10, 1971. His home address was of Wheeler, TX.

He was born Nov. 3, 1881 in Clay County, Alabama. He was the son of James A. Baird and Mary Frances Machen Baird. He was the grandson of Capt. Isaac Baird.He was married to Ora Itura Slaughter on Dec 28, 1905 in Hillsboro, TX.

Mr. Baird had lived in the Wheeler area since 1920 and had been a resident of the Golden Spread Nursing home in Shamrock for the past 3 years. He was a farmer all of his life until he retired in 1949. He was a 50 year member of the Wheeler Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Wheeler.

Survivors include 3 sons: J. Dudley Baird and C.C. (Pete) Baird both of Wheeler, J T Baird of Amarillo. Four daughters: Ola Lee Davis of Gruver, Lucille Anderson of Midland, TX, Loraine Wagner of Wheeler, and Gillrie Rogers of Sudan, TX. A brother John D. Baird of Kelton, a sister Ola LaQuey of Center, CO and 11 grandchildren, and 9 greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1949, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Services were held in the First Baptist Church of Wheeler on Sat. June 12, 1971at 2 pm. Rev. M.B. Smith of Pampa officiated and Rev. Keith McCormick assisted. Internment was at the Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of Wright Funeral Home.

Pall Bearers were the grandsons.

Honorary Pall Bearers: Dick Guynes, John Hodges, Charlie Whiteley, Joe Henderson, L.A. McWhorter.

WHEELER - Final rites for James Z. Baird, 89, a resident of Wheeler for the past 48 years and a retired farmer, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church here.

Officiating will be the Rev. M.B. Smith, a Baptist minister from Pampa. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler.

Mr. Baird died Thursday morning at the Golden Spread Nursing Home in Shamrock where he had been a patient since 1968.

He was born in Clay County, Alabama and married Ora Slaughter in 1905 at Hillsboro.

The couple moved to Wheeler in 1920. He farmed a mile east of Wheeler until his retirement about 21 years ago.

Mrs. Baird died in February 1949.

Mr. Baird was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wheeler and a 50-year Mason.

Among survivors are three sons, Dudley and C.C., both of Wheeler and J.T. of 2610 N. Hill in Amarillo; four daughters, Mrs. Ola Lee Davis of Gruver, Mrs. Lucille Anderson of Midland, Mrs. Lorine Wagner of Wheeler and Mrs. Gillrie Rogers of Sudan; a brother, John of Kelton; a sister, Mrs. Ola Laquey of Center, Colo.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
