On 4/22 in 1912 Virgle Lee Carpenter was born in a root cellar in Jackson County, Altus, Oklahoma. Some of the worst tornados in history were striking the area at the time, and his mother was so terrified of them that she remained in the cellar for over a week with her new born son. As Virgle grew up, he had a dream of being a doctor. He was a very smart man, but when his father got his hand caught in the chain of a combine and lost about half of it, Virgle's dream evaporated. He was needed on the farm. He never owned his own farm but always worked diligently for others until he retired in California where he lived out the remainder of his days growing a huge garden on his son Carl's place in Merced that all enjoyed. Virgle loved and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. Married Loula Dee Arms July 15, 1939 and they had five children, Carl Wayne, Ronal, George, Patsy and Peggy.
