Corning Free Press: While the general public was aware of the delicate health of Hugh M Cresswell, yet the news of his critical illness and subsequent death was a shock, because he had seemed better than usual this winter. Thursday morning he was taken ill with a sudden attack of what was believed to be pleurisy and Friday a lung collapse revealed the seriousness of his condition. He grew steadily worse until Tuesday when death relieved him of his
sufferings.

Hugh M, Cresswell, son of Frank and Emma Cresswell was born in Adams County, Jan. 19, 1876 and died Feb. 22, 1938, at his home in northwest Corning at 10:45 a. m., aged 62 years, 1 month and 3 days. Mr. Cresswell had been handicapped since early manhood because of an injury, but his excellent mind had triumphed over physical handicaps and he had made for himself a place in a community which respected him for his courage and fine character.

He received his early education in the Adams county schools and later attended Highland Park college in Des Moines where he took a business course specializing in bookkeeping. He was employed by various firms and from 1908 until he moved to Corning a few years ago, he served as secretary of the school board in Grant township and as township clerk from 1915. Thus he indicated his ability in his chosen line of work, and the confidence reposed in him by those he served.

He was married to Donna Gibson in Kansas City, March 23, 1910 and to this union three children were born, Phillip, Robert and Martha, all whom survive. He is also survived by a brother, Byron Cresswell, of Lenox.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at, 2:30 o'clock at the Boyd Roland funeral home conducted by the Rev. J. H. Krenmyre and burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.
