When 16 or 17 he came to Oregon from Iowa to be with his uncle Alf Dillinger. He worked at various jobs and eventually married Estella McLauchlin. They had three children: Geneva, Edith and Elmer. For a period of time the family moved back to Iowa, but soon returned to the Fairview area of Sherman County. (info received June 2015 from Charlott Jones)
