Obituary:

Peter Stanley Altman, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at VCU Medical Center in Richmond from complications of pneumonia.
He was born in Takoma Park, Md., Jan. 29, 1925. As a child, he lived in Singapore, Buenos Aires, Texas, Colorado and Maryland with his Seventh-day Adventist parents, Roger and Dee Altman.
He was drafted into the Army and served in World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines, where he contracted polio.
After his army service, he received a degree in physics at Washington Missionary College and taught physics in Prince George's County, Md.
In 1949, he began his 36-year career at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, as a physicist. He retired in 1987 as a computer systems analyst.
The Altman family lived in Fredericksburg from 1959 to 1973 before moving to Foneswood. Through the years, Mr. Altman supported and served his church as an elder, treasurer, Bible teacher, organist and board member of both Carter Memorial Seventh-day Adventist and Tappahannock Junior Academy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Bobby. Pete leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 61 years, Loni Carter Altman; one son, Daniel Roger Altman and his wife, Susan; two daughters, Linda Dee Baker and her husband, Skip, and Susan Marie Fritts and her husband, Jim; four grandchildren, Roger Altman, Dee Bartholomew, Amanda Gaddy and Tony Fritts; and three great-grandchildren, Ian and Matthew McDaniel and Steven Altman.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Carter Memorial SDA Church, Newland Road (State Route 624) and Carter Town Road (State Route 693) in Richmond County.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carter Memorial Community Center in Montross, c/o 121 Carter Town Road, Warsaw, VA. 22572. Cards may also be sent to the same address.
