DR. WILLIAM H. WOMBLE, JR
GREENSBORO -- Dr. William High Womble, Jr., 36, a prominent Greensboro physician, died here yesterday after an illness of several months. Dr. Womble, a Moore County native who began the practice of medicine here following service in World War II, had been a general practitioner and later became a specialist in internal medicine. The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Womble of Greensboro, he attended public schools here and later was a student at Guilford College. He also attended the University of North Carolina and the University of Richmond Medical School. He served his internship at a hospital in Norfolk, Va. He served as a doctor with the Army's Office of Strategic Services during the war, seeing service in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was awarded the Bronze Star for making a midnight seaplane trip into Japanese territory to bring out an OSS agent who had cracked under the mental strain of his undercover work behind the enemy lines. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, the former Hazel Wheeler of Greensboro; a young son, William Hugh, III; a daughter, Susan, and two sisters, Mrs. Scott Holman of Greensboro and Mrs. Graham Reich of Columbia, S. C. Funeral will be held 4 p. m. Wednesday at the West Market Street Methodist Church. (Obit provided by CIndy Womble Billman)
