Mr. A. K. Giddens, 88, died Friday (April 17, 2009) at Baptist Village Retirement Communities following a long illness.
He was a native of Atkinson County but had lived most of his life in Waycross. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Teedom Giddens and Beadie Mae Burch Giddens; his son-in-law, Jim Blackburn; three sisters, Martha Long, Eliza Ann Clement, Leona Lewis; and five brothers, Kin Giddens, T. M. Giddens, John Henry Giddens, Seaborn Lewis Giddens, and Carlton Giddens.
He retired in 1981 from Independent Life Insurance Company and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had been a member of Second Baptist Church since 1968 and the fellowship Sunday School Class . He was a Deacon, a former Sunday School Superintendant and Trustee.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Wilma Taft Giddens of Waycross; a daughter, Bonnie Blackburn of Waycross; a son, Billy Giddens (wife Barbara) of Woodstock; three sisters, Cora Bell Pafford and Opal Hodges both of Jacksonville, FL, Dorothy McClean of Alma; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (April 21, 2009) at Second Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at Music Funeral Home Monday night from 6 until 8.
