She was born June 30, 1922, at Belleville, a daughter of the late Reuben L. and Nellie Whipkey Piggott. Laverne attended Grace Gospel Church, retired from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services and was a former employee of American Viscose. She was also a member of the Helping Hands Quilting Guild.

Surviving are three sons, David D. Steele (Connie) of Belleville and twins, Mark S. Steele (Cynthia) of Mineral Wells and Michael W. Steele (Tammy) of Williamstown; two daughters, Sharon Boone (Terry) of Williamstown and Connie Radcliff of Charleston; eight grandchildren, Jami Whicker, Megan Steele, Stacy Boone (fiance, Peter Filozof), Hannah Steele, Matthew Steele (Jennifer), Logan Steele, Alicia Perry (Shane) and Cody Steele; three great-grandchildren, Gracie and Dillon Perry and Joshua Steele; her twin sister, Ferne Anderson of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Edgar (Ted) Steele on April 3, 1991; a sister, Regina "Jean" Smith, wife of Lawrence Smith; and a son-in-law, David L. Radcliff.
