Clarence W. Bruenger, 90, of Humboldt, Kansas, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kansas.

Clarence was born November 13, 1918, on the family farm east of Humboldt, Kansas, to Louis F. and Agnes M. (Mueller) Bruenger.

He grew up on the family farm.

He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 90th Division stationed in Europe where he had been a prisoner of war and was awarded the purple heart among other honors.

On March 11, 1951, Clarence married Verna M. Baker at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Kansas.

They made their home on a farm east of Humboldt until moving to town in 1969.

Clarence farmed and drove a school bus for Zillah Grade School before working as a custodian for Humboldt National Bank. After he retired from the bank he operated his own saw sharpening business.

He enjoyed woodworking and making projects for his family.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humboldt, KS.

Survivors include his wife, Verna M. Bruenger of the home; two sons, Lyle Bruenger & wife, Diana of Chanute, KS, and Loren Bruenger of Humboldt, KS; one daughter, Lynn Smith & husband, Richard of Ft. Scott, KS; one brother, Melvin Bruenger & wife, Patricia of Humboldt, KS; one sister, Elsie Bruenger of Humboldt, KS; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry W. Bruenger in 1978, a brother, Russell Bruenger; and by two sisters, Della Frederick and Clara Cooper.

Funeral service will be Monday, April 20, 2009, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humboldt, KS. The Rev. David Meier will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt, Kansas.

Memorials suggested to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, KS, which is in charge of arrangements.
