Son of Robert Hardee Hemphill, Jr. and Mary Huguenin Barnwell.

Robert married Elaine Melbourne Vincent on 20 Dec 1947 in Summerville, South Carolina.

He spent three years in the Army Air Force as a pilot. He worked for his father at the Ice Plant in Summerville, then as a carpenter. Ended up as a general contractor. Eventually, he owned the Credit Bureau of Summerville, Inc. He also engaged in building homes, and he had commercial properties. In 1955 he took over the Hemphill Construction Company from his father, who had started it in 1947.

In later years, he had his own airplane, but he eventually sold it, when his health made it unsafe for him to continue flying.

Robert and Elaine had two children.

(Note: Robert always went by Robert Hardee Hemphill III, but his grandfather was really Robert Herman Hemphill, and not Robert Hardee Hemphill.)

Robert was very proud of his family heritage, and he served on the Board of the Hemphill Historical Society for several years. At that time, Robert and Elaine were living at 103 Reynolds Road, Summerville, South Carolina, 29483.
