Robert Hardee Hemphill, Jr., was actually the son of Robert Herman Hemphill. He was not a Jr. at all, but was always called Robert Jr. The Hardee came from his mother's side of the family.

Robert was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, which was in Perry County then, but it is now in Forrest County.

He married Mary Huguenin Barnwell on 3 Aug 1924 in Charles, South Carolina.

Robert was President of the Southern Ice Company in Charleston, South Carolina. He also started the Hemphill Construction Company in 1947, which was taken over by his son abt. 1955.

Robert's father, Robert Herman Hemphill, was an inventor and invented a process for getting the bubbles out of ice, and he had ice plants in Hattiesburg, Miss., Charleston, South Carolina, and Summerville, South Carolina, and possibly elsewhere as well. Robert Hardee Hemphill, Jr., apparently took over the Ice Company business from his father at some point.

Robert had some hunting dogs and loved to hunt rabbits and other game. When I first met him, Robert took me hunting with him. It is a favorite memory and was a new experience for a very young girl. I wish we had lived closer together, so I could have spent more time with Robert and his family. - Z. Tom
