John Albert Jenkins was born in Winston, Oregon on Feb. 2, 1868 to early Oregon pioneers. His father, William L. Jenkins, crossed the Oregon trail in 1844. His mother, Emeline Belieu, was William's second wife. She crossed the trail with her family in about 1847. The two families, Jenkins and Belieu, were settlers in Coos and Douglas counties, Oregon.

John Albert married his first wife, Emma 'Dora' Adams, in June 1888. They had five children, Audrey, Rita, Vera Carletus, Floyd and Avis Vreta, when mother Dora died in childbirth at 29 years of age. The children were split apart and sent to live with various other relatives. Audrey and Avis Vreta, for example, were sent to live with John Albert's brother and his wife, Henry and Mary Jenkins.

August 17, 1902, John Albert Jenkins remarried Mary Ellen Smith to whom he would remain married for the rest of their lives. Some years he worked as a foreman at the lumber camp or sawmill, others he farmed. In his old age, he moved to Central Washington near Yakima to live close to his daughter, Audrey (Jenkins) Johnson, and many of his grandchildren.

He outlived his wife and all of his children with the exception of his daughter, Avis Vreta (Jenkins) Moser, known as "Auntie" in the family, who lived 102 years.
