NAPIER, DAVID JOSEPH
David Joseph Napier, 18, an Oak Ridge High School Senior, drowned Thursday about 8:45 p.m. in a swimming accident near Chestnut Ridge Park off Melton Hill Drive. The accident occurred when a group of youths were swinging from a thick, knotted rope that had been tied to a tree that stretched out over Melton Hill Lake. David was a member of Central Baptist Church and had been employed at Danver's Restaurant. Glenn Moses, David's uncle, said the victim was very atheletic. "He was in the basketball league, he ran in several races, played soccer, and was very active in swimming," Moses said. He added that David was a member of the Boys' Club and had won many ribbons in track and field events. David would have graduated Thursday night at ORHS graduation ceremonies. The Napiers have lived in Oak Ridge since moving from Loveland, OH, in 1975. The funeral will be held at Weatherford Mortuary Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Filmore Strunk, pastor at Central Baptist, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Weatherford. Besides his parents Bob and Joyce Napier, David is survived by two sisters: Trina Napier (Mrs. Steven) McNerney, who lives in the Philippines; and Vickie Napier, who lives in Pensacola, FL; grandparents Mrs. Joetta Newman, 130 N. Jefferson Avenue, and Ewell Napier, Detroit, MI; and two uncles: Glenn Moses of Florida and A.J. Moses, 181 Robertsville Road.
