Jack D. Herrman, 44, Topeka, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Herrman was co-owner of Herrman Excavating Co. He was National Contractor of the Year in 1986 and 1987.

He was born May 14, 1954, in Topeka, the son of Patrick L. and Mary G. Staab Herrman. He graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in 1972, and he attended Washburn University, where he was a member of the football team. He was a lifelong Topeka resident.

Mr. Herrman was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Topeka Homebuilders Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Federation, Pheasants Forever, Quail Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

He coached the Topeka Sharks elementary student football team that competed in the Lawrence Youth Football league and the Topeka Gators baseball team of the Suburban Baseball League. Mr. Herrman also was a member of the chain gang that ran the chains for Hayden High School home football games.

He married Diane Schmidtlein on April 22, 1978, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Herrman and Angela Herrman, both at home; a son, Doug Herrman, at home; his mother, Mary Herrman, Topeka; a brother, David Herrman, Topeka; and a sister, Jan Carter, Lenexa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Herrman will lie in state from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church where rosaries will be recited by Hayden High School community at 5 p.m., the parish at 6:30 p.m. and the family at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jack Herrman Memorial Fund to Benefit the Hayden High School Athletic Department and sent in care of Nancy Goodall at Nations Bank. Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
