Elizabeth as the second of 11 children born to John and Priscilla Slonaker Swisher. Her older sibling was Simon Walter Swisher. Her younger siblings in order of birth were Joseph Jefferson Switzer, Nancy Virginia Swisher (m. Robert Jordan), Harriet Natholia (m. John Fultz) and Henry Hercules Switzer, William Gregg Swisher (died when an infant), Samanthia Jane (m. John Miller), George Pearce, John Luther and Mary Isabelle (m. Stuart Kepner) Switzer.
Her mother Priscilla was the daughter of George and Nancy Marchant Slonaker. She married John Switzer on Nov. 27, 1838 in Virginia (which is now West Virginia). She died between 1857-1860 in Virginia (now West Virginia). We don't know where she is buried.
Sometime after her mother died, her father and seven of the children went to Illinois. In Illinois they were known as Switzer. The children who remained in West Virginia were known as Swisher.
