Killed In Action when B-29 Superfortress #42-24694 had to make a water landing near Kobler Field, Saipan, unable to reach the airfield following an aborted mission to lay mines near Japan, due to a mechanical problem. 2nd Lt. Glenn E. Pavey was also killed. Eight other crew members survived and were rescued. The bomber made a wheels-down water landing inside the reef just beyond the airstrip.
