He is the son of Philip Ferris and Harriet Metcalf. He was married (1st) in 1858 to Eliza Tewell. She died about 1862 or 1863. Phillip Ferris was born 1 Sep 1813 in Cherry Valley, Osego Co, NY and died in 1844 in Cedar Rapids, IA.

James S. Ferris was in the 82nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry and participated in the Kentucky campaign of 1862 and the battle of Perryville. His wife, Eliza Tewell Ferris, died and he left the army to care for Sarah Adeline Ferris, age 1. He married 3 times and had about 21 children. He farmed and was a plaster/lather.
