Lucille E. (Darwin) Erickson, 94, resident of Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center, passed away on April 3, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland WI with her family near her. She was born February 26, 1914, in Grandview WI, the daughter of Sherwood J. "Joe" and Anna (Johnson) Darwin.
She graduated from Drummond High School and Teachers State College in Superior. She taught school for 11 years in Moquah and Benoit Grade Schools. While living and working a farm, she and her husband, Everett J. Erickson, built in 1949 what was known as the Cottage Cafe, located on Highway 2, 13 miles west of Ashland WI. A few years later, they added onto the cafe and built a motel. At that time, the name was changed to Erickson's Cafe and Motel. They owned and operated the business for 25 years.
She is survived by two sons, Lee (Audrey) Erickson and Larry "Tugboat" Erickson, both of Ashland WI; three brothers, Robert (Helen) Darwin, Naples FL; Donald Darwin, Zephyrhills FL; and George (Violet) Darwin, Zephyrhills FL; three sisters, Beatrice Zydor, Grand Rapids MI; Edith Edwardson, Midland MI, and Ila Mae Lemmons, Grand Rapids MI; by blood relation and marriage she has 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, Chloe Cunningham and Mitch Hebert; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherwood "Joe" and Anna Darwin; husband Everett Erickson; two brothers, Raymond and Jay Darwin; and two sisters Marguerite Thornton and Grace Brakken.
A memorial service will be held at Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland WI, with Dr. Darrel Robertson officiating. Inurnment will take place in May in the Fish Creek Cemetery, town of Keystone, WI.
