Mr. Kappelman died Wednesday, May 5, 1993, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 6, 1924, in Ottawa, the son of Otto and Erma Bouse Kappelman. He attended public school in Lawrence and was a 1942 graduate of Liberty Memorial High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Kansas University in 1949.
Mr. Kappelman was a program manager in Kansas University's Continuing Education Department for more than 25 years. He retired in April.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 29th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, and he received three Purple Hearts in Europe.
He was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 595, Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Kansas University Alumni Association.
He married Jo Ann Hurst on Feb. 5, 1950, in Topeka. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Margy Rose, Lawrence, and Carol Kappelman, Kansas City, Mo.; one son, Clay Kappelman, Lawrence; two brothers, Glenn Kappelman, Lawrence, and Lester Kappelman, Wichita; one sister, LaVerne Harris, Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Francis, of Wichita.
