Lester Kappelman, 81, were held Thursday, Oct. 1, at St. James Episcopal Church.

Mr. Kappelman died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998.

He was a native of Westphalia before moving to Lawrence in 1932. He graduated from Kansas University in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

He worked for the Works Progress Administration after graduation and until he joined the Army in 1942. After the war he was the director of special services with the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Wichita.

He became a salesman with Chester-Hunter Realty in 1950. He later became a partner in the firm. He was a former president of the Wichita Area Association of Realtors and was named Realtor of the Year in 1964, receiving the Walter Morris Trophy, the organization's highest honor. He also headed Chester-Kappelman-Gaudreau Urban Renewal for many years.

He served on the boards of the Wichita Symphony, St. James Episcopal Church Vestry, Rotary International, the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wichita Crime Commission.

He married Anne Houston in February 1948. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kate Churi, Philadelphia; one son, Michael, Vashon, Wash.; one sister, LaVerne Harris, Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Glenn, Lawrence, and three grandchildren.
