BABCOCK, Lyman was born April 4, 1821 in Scipio, Cayuga County, New York, the son of George Babcock and Clarinda Birch. He married Phoebe Ann Witter in 1843 and from this union three children were born, Helen A., Celia Augusta (Elias Henry Ditzler) and Phoebe Ann (Herman Morse Fox). Phoebe died about 1849 and Lyman left the three children with his father and joined the gold rush in California. On his return he married Mrs. Emerancy Ellis Smith on January 13, 1851 and from this union three children were born, Charles F., Fred Lyman and Ida May (William Day Gates). He was a plow manufacturer. He was raised April 15, 1856 in Euclid Lodge and served as Secretary of the Lodge in 1857. He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason February 25, 1859. He was a brother in law of Ashley Whitney Colt. He died May 13, 1869 in West Lyons, Cook County, Illinois and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
