Lewis Barker, 86, Rites Held May 11
Funeral services for Joseph Lewis Barker, 86, of Gravity, were held May 11 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Pastor Perry Cozadd officiating. Mr. Barker died May 8, 1971, in Rosary Hospital, Corning. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.
Joseph Lewis Barker, oldest son of Joseph Carey and Ida Ramalia Barker, and twin brother [of] James Otis, was born Jan. 27, 1885, near Griswold, Iowa.
Feb. 5, 1908, he was married to Bessie Barton, moving to the present home in 1916, where they celebrated their 57th anniversary. To this union a son, Kenneth, and a daughter, Mildred, were born.
He had been a member of the Oak Hill Church since Jan. 9, 1910.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie, father, mother, brothers, Otis and Clint, and a sister, Roxie Laird.
Survivors include his son, Kenneth, of Gravity, daughter, Mildred, of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Edith, grandson, Kennard, of the U. S. Navy, serving aboard U. S. S. Koelsch; sister, Emma Price, of Gravity; brother, Mark, and a sister, Ruth Lundeen, of Kelowna, British Columbia; brothers, Glen and Hugh, of Edmonton, Alberta; cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Friends he treasured precious as their visits meant so much to him. He loved the land, the toil, the sweat, the harvest, never tiring of the challenges each new day brought forth.
