H. M. was born the son of William "A." and Malinda Tuggle (Cooper) Churchill in Campbell County. When the family left for Texas in 1878, he stayed behind to practice law and settled in Coal Creek.

A daughter, Hattie Mae, was born in 1883. H. M.'s niece reported that he never married. As an adult, Hattie moved to Ardmore, OK where her father's sister, Mary Lincoln Madden, lived.

Horace was in Coal Creek in 1902 when the Fraterville Mine disaster occurred. He signed the appeal to the public for donations to help the widows and orphans.

In 1888, H. M. was a member of the Log Cabin Club, an Anderson County Republican Executive Committee that was formed by Attorney Fowler.

When H. M.'s mother died in 1911, he went to Ardmore, OK and while there found her bible. In it were the names of 3 children who were his sister and brothers. They are buried in Coopers View Cemetery in Campbell County. Other siblings included C. C. "Scott" (MO), Sarah Adeline (Brown)(TX), Squire Hunter, also a lawyer (TX), Mary Lincoln Madden(TX), and Nancy Catherine (Minnis)(TX). His parents are buried in Denton, TX.
