  THOMAS H. GIDEON

Tom Gideon once again came back to Springfield and got his first taste of politics, winning election as alderman from the old second ward for two terms.
In that early part of his political career he also served as chairman of the Greene County Republican Central Committee.
Gideon then was elected probate judge of Greene County in 1912 and served two  four-year terms.
Leaving public office in 1920, he went into private law practice and "officed"  with a son,  J. Oliver Gideon, now director of finance for the city,  from 1924 to 1934.
The stormiest period of his career came in those days--- particularly in the mayorality campaign of 1928 when he defeated E.E.E. McJimsey,  then editor of the old Springfield Republican, in what oldtimers call one of the most heated contests the city has ever seen.
There were numerous municipal disputes from 1928-1932, at City Hall but J. Oliver Gideon recalled today that "Dad was tough as a pine knot and he was always a battler."
Leaving the mayor's job in 1932, Gideon practiced law for a 14-year period before he again decided to return to active politics.
He ran for magistrate judge in 1946, and served in the office until 1954, losing in that year to Democrat Ernie Hamlin.
Gideon, who was a member of South Street Christian Church, is survived by two other sons,  T.J. Gideon, Jackson, Miss.,  and Francis Gideon, Decatur, GA.;  two daughters, Mrs. Vivian Manaugh, Altadena, Calif.,  and Mrs. Betty McKinley, Aztec, N.M.;  one brother, Waldo, 930 South Campbell;  a sister, Mrs. Mille Hubbard, 951 South Campbell; and several grandchildren.
