Funeral services for Newell Knight Merrill, 44, were held Saturday at the Naples Ward Chapel. he died Thursday of last week at 2:50 p.m. in Vernal.
Prayer at the mortuary was offered by Morris R. Cook. Invocation at the services was offered by Curtis Hunsaker and the choir sang "Whispering Hope" as the opening song. First speaker was J. Ross Merrell followed by a duet "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" sung by Daun Huber and Rex Taylor.
Concluding speaker was Archie Johnson and closing song was "Beyond The Sunset," by the choir, with reading accompaniment by Mrs. Orlo Goodrich. Benediction by Ashel Manwaring.
Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery with special military services under the direction of the American Legion. Pallbearers were four brothers, Charles, Ernest, Frank, Earl and two brothers-in-law, John Adams and Melvin Gardiner.
Mr. Merrill was born January 28, 1916 in Bluebell, Duchesne County, a son of Charles Elwin and Rhoda Knight Merrill. He married Merle Marshall, December 9, 1933 in Vernal. They were later divorced. He was employed as a miner and trucker and was a member of the LDS Church.
Survivors include four sons and two daughters, Mrs. Donna Marie Lyman, Salt Lake City; Richard, Ronnie, Duane, Dallis, Ruby, all of Vernal, grandsons; father; five brothers and four sisters, Mrs. Melvin Gardiner, Vernal; Mrs. Meryle Nall, Craig, Colorado; Charles and Ernest, both of Rifle, Colorado; Elwin, U.S. Army, Germany; Mrs. John Adams, Frank and Earl, all of Vernal; Mrs. William Shelly, St. Joseph, Missouri.
