Laney Tull was born 1802 in Lenoir County, NC, the youngest of 8 known children (2 boys/6 girls) born to farmers Charles Tull (1753-1836) who fought in the Revolutionary War, and his wife, Sarah "Sally" Hardy/Hardee (1763-1836).

She was the paternal grandchild of Issac Tull of Baltimore who came to Dobbs County, NC with his parents ca. 1755 and later married Winifred Caldwell; and the maternal grandchild of Lemuel "Lamb" Hardy II and his wife, Mary Sutton, of Lenoir County.

Laney married Green Jones, of Lenoir County, on March 3, 1822 when she was 20 years old, and he 19. The couple moved to South Carolina for a time, then later moved to Georgia, but came back home to Lenoir County after their sojourn.

They would be parents to 11 known children (6 boys/5 girls):

* William Charles Jones (1823-1833)
* Frances "Frank" Green Jones (1825-aft 1885), FL
* Sarah Emeline Jones (1827)
* James Mason Jones (1829-1833)
* Fannie Jones (c. 1830)
* Elizabeth Margaret "Bettie" Jones (1831-1912)
* George Washington Jones (1836-1881)
* Martha Rebecca Jones (1839)
* Albert Jones (c. 1840)
* Mary Ann Eliza Jones (1845-1849)
* Asa Warren Jones (1846-1899)

Laney was widowed in 1848 when her husband of nearly 26 years died young at age 47. She remained in Kinston, Lenoir County until at least 1860, maintaining the family farm and raising her younger children.

Her daughter, Elizabeth Margaret "Bettie" Jones", became the 3rd wife of Calvin Pool of St. Mary's, Wake Co, on April 1, 1863, and by 1870, the widow Laney Tull Jones had moved into their household where she remained until her death.

Laney Jones died in 1876 at about age 74.
