John Benjamin Holland was the son of John Rickman and Elizabeth Walker Holland. In 1843, while still in Georgia, John B. married Mary Ann Covington and in 1846, they came to Texas and settled in Burnet County. Also making this trip was a sister, Simruda and her husband, William Covington, and a brother, Samuel Ely Holland who was still single.

John and Mary Ann Holland were the parents of seven children; David Rickman, Samuel Lorenzo, Harriet Eliza, Mirrah Elizabeth, Rebecca Ann, Benjamin Robert and William Asberry Holland. John Benjamin died on July 21, 1855, at the age of 34 years. The cause of his death is not known and there is nothing to indicate it was anything other than a health issue.
