John R. Holland came to Texas in the 1840's while Texas was still a Republic. He was married to Elizabeth Walker who remained in Georgia and was killed later by her maid. They had nine children: Thomas Walker, William Andrew, Mary Burns Holland Bell, Nancy Ann Holland Jackson, John Benjamin, Mary Elisabeth Holland (who married Moses Holland), Sarah Jane Holland Dobkins, Samuel Ely, and Simruda Catherine Holland Covington. The land that Dublin is built on orinally belonged to J. R. Holland
