Vice-Admiral The Honourable John Byron. He is credited by older sources with having discovered Patagonia. Certainly, he was ship-wrecked there. In 1765, he retrieved the Falkland Islands on behalf of Great Britain, starting a feud which still continues to this day (2009). He is stated to be interred in the Berkeley family vault, within the church. John Byron was grandfather of the the famous poet, Lord Byron, and is often referred to as "foul weather Jack".

Byron's grandson, the poet, gave him this epitath:-

"Reversed for me our grandsire's fate of yore,-
He had no rest at sea, nor I on shore."
