Fielden Poston was the oldest of 11 children born to Susannah Patton and John W. Poston of Wytheville, Virginia. He married Christine Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Kegley on the 2nd day of January, 1862. The couple would have one child, William Fielden Poston.

Conscripted on 1/24/1863; reported 4/30/1863; enlisted for the duration of the war, mustered into Company D, 30th Battalion Virginia 'Sharpshooters', as a Private.
Absent, sick July & Aug 1863 Roll.
POW, Libby Springs, MD., "near Washington", 7/13/1864; confined Old Capitol Prison 7/15/1864; transferred 7/23/1864 to and arriving 7/25/1864 at Elmira, NY.; stated his desire 9/30/1864 to take Oath of Allegiance to U.S.A.; died there of pneumonia.

The 30th Battalion Sharpshooters was organized in August, 1862, with six companies.
It was the lead unit in July 1864 when the C.S.A. General Ewell's Corps attempted an attack on the Union capitol in the "Raid on Washington". The battalion got within sight of the dome of the U.S. Capitol building and some of its men even took a shot at U.S. President Lincoln who was touring the Union defenses at Ft. Stevens. The 30th Virginia covered the army's withdrawal.
