Marie Falkar's birth name was Mary Agnes McLaughlin. She was the natural daughter of Mahala Agnes Lewis and Eugene McLaughlin. Mary Agnes McLaughlin's step father was James Harvey Johnson. Her mother and stepfather informally changed her surname to Johnson when she was about 2 years old. Mary Agnes used the given name of Marie Johnson until she married her first husband in 1905.

Marie was married twice. Her first husband was Fernando James Herrin, they were married November 5,1905 Lawrence Township, Marion County, Indiana. They had three children, Mary Jane Herrin, Elizabeth Lucinda Herrin and Agnes Ellen Herrin. Marie and her second husband John Jacob Falkar Sr. were married 1916 in San Francisco, California. They had one son John Jacob "Jack" Falkar III.

Marie's stepfather made a career in the Army and the family traveled to many Army Post's between the years 1871 and 1906, with the last post being Fort Mason in the Presidio in San Francisco, California.

In 1890 Marie enrolled in the Boyles Commercial and Shorthand College in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1900 her parents and family settled in Fort Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence Township, Marion County, Indiana. There she met and married Fernando James Herrin. In 1914 they made San Francisco their home joining her mother Agnes and stepfather James Johnson who had been stationed at Fort Mason in San Francisco in 1906. After Fernando's death in 1915 she worked as a maid for the officers at Fort Mason in San Francisco. She met John Jacob Falkar and they were married in 1916. For the next many years Marie cared for her family, parents and siblings. She was known for her hospitality and frequently would welcome her siblings and their children into her home for extended visits.
