Agnes Ducar Elish, 90, of Canonsburg, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in Consulate Nursing Home in McMurray.
She was born October 24, 1918, in Stockdale, a daughter of Frank and Anna Gazi Ducar. During her childhood, she attended the local elementary school in Stockdale.
Mrs. Elish was valedictorian of California High School Class of 1935. Following high school, she earned her bachelor of science degree from California State Teachers College. Following her graduation from California, Mrs. Elish took a position teaching first and second grades in her hometown grade school. She earned $100 for an eight-month school year, from which she donated teaching materials such as study guides, books and puzzles that she would bring from home for the benefit of the students.
At one time, Mrs. Elish started a Girl Scout troop in her hometown.
When the United States entered World War I, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE. She attended basic training at Victoria Hotel in Boston and Hunter College in Bronx, N.Y., and became storekeeper first class. She then served from 1941 to 1945 at Norman Oklahoma Naval Base, where the Navy based propeller airplanes. She was honorably discharged as storekeeper first class in 1945.
Following her discharge from the Navy, Mrs. Elish resumed teaching first and second grades in Stockdale.
She received her master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh and then attended Temple University to obtain a school administrator's certification. She was offered and accepted a position in Riverside, N.J., supervising the reading program from first to ninth grades.
In 1953, she met and married her husband, then-Washington County Controller Peter Elish, who preceded her in death.
Following her marriage, she taught for Canon-McMillan School District for 30 years.
After her retirement, she traveled extensively with her husband throughout Europe and the United States.
Mrs. Elish was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.
She also was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association, SNPJ Heritage Room Museum and the Women's Auxiliary of Canonsburg Hospital. She was a member of the board of directors at Mayview State Hospital and was active in various local political organizations.
She enjoyed playing bridge, solving crossword puzzles and reading and was a member of the Wednesday Friends Book Club at Canonsburg Library.
Mrs. Elish had a strong sense of family togetherness and enjoyed family gatherings and reunions. She documented many family events and occasions by keeping records and pictures and creating albums spanning the four generations of her family, thereby creating a veritable treasure of family genealogy.
Surviving are her son, Peter and wife Jeannette Elish of Canonsburg; a grandson, Christopher Elish; a sister, Anna Deane Ducar; a brother, Stephen Ducar and wife Judith of O'Fallon of Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a brother, Theodore Ducar.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 194 East College Street, Canonsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 902 of Houston and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg Honor Guard.
