Death of B. "Dad" Merritt, Civil War Veteran G.A.R. Post Commander Brazilla (Dad) Merritt, age 89, died at the family home in this city on Friday last (23rd). Mr. Merritt was born in Indiana March 21, 1845, and at the age of 18 enlisted in the civil war, serving over three years, or until the close of the war. In 1884 he came to Kansas, settling at Parsons, but a little later removed to Independence, where he has since resided. He served many years as court house custodian, and by his courteous treatment and friendly dispostion, won the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He had served as Post Commander of the G.A.R. in this city for over 8 years, and was the moving spirit in this organization. Mr. Merritt is survived by six children, Mrs. Ed Olive of Noel, Missouri; O.B. Merritt of McAlsester, Oklahoma; Charles Merritt of Hutchinson, Kansas; Mrs. C.F. Hoffman, Mrs Homer Erwin and Oscar Merritt, all of Independence. Services were held at the Christian Church on Sunday afternoon. Burial was in Mount Hope on 28 March 1934 in Kansas.
