Johnny Albert Akins, age 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII, as a sergeant in Germany. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Sweetwater. Mr. Akins worked at the Loomis Meat Packaging Plant in Sweetwater for 29 years, and retired from Elm Hill Meats after 12 years of service. Preceded in death by his parents: Luke and Elvavine "Vennie" Akins, brother: J.R. Akins. Survivors include wife of 67 years: Ruth White Akins, of Sweetwater, daughter and son-in-law: Vivian and Chet Borges, of Farragut, son and daughter-in-law: Dewayne and Debby Lane Akins, of Maryville, grandchildren: Tim and Mark Rhodes, Brian Richardson, Luke and John Akins, 4 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, sisters: Lillie Mae Akins, Annie Ruth Price, both of Lenoir City, brother: Bobby Burchfield, of Philadelphia, several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 18, 2012 from 6:00P.M. until 8:00P.M. at Kyker Funeral Homes, Sweetwater, with the funeral service to follow at 8:00P.M. in Kyker's Chapel with Rev. Johnny Carr officiating. Interment 2:00P.M. Saturday in the West View Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Sweetwater Gold Star V.F.W. Post 5156 and members of the Monroe County D.A.V.
