J. L. Barton, 71, of Joyce, died in an Alexandria hospital at 2:30 a.m. August 17, 1960, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, August 18, from Sardis Baptist Church with burial in the Brown Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

Rev. Willie James, pastor of Union Baptist Church, officiated.

Mr. Barton, a veteran of World War I, was a retired farmer. He had been active in the church and community affairs until ill health forced him to retire.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. J. L Barton, Joyce; five sons, Herman and M. L. of Winnfield; Preston of Joyce, Jimmie and Russell of Summers, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Herschel Page of Baton Rouge and Mrs. Jimmy Roberts of Joyce.
