He was a blacksmith for the Old Dominion mine, and had just completed his apprenticeship. He was riding in an automobile with friends on Golden Hill, when they passed 3 girls on horses. One of the girls appeared to be in danger of falling off her horse when the saddle slipped. Charles jumped from the car to help her, lost his balance, and hit his head hard on the road. He was taken to the Old Dominion hospital, where it was discovered he had fractured his skull. He died in about 2 hours.
