Dad was born May 30, l9l4 in Bancroft, ID to Hans Christian and Sarah Amelia Corbett Johnson. He spent his early years with his family on an LDS mission in Jacksonville, FL, and then in Idaho, where he helped his father farm and later ran a hardware store.
Dad played football and ran track during his high school days and began a lifelong fascination with communications and electronics. At various times he was known as W7BLM, W6NKD, or W4YGH to his many ham radio friends. During the great depression, Dad and his family moved to Logan, UT where he attended Utah State Agricultural College, and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
He began his career as a schoolteacher in Sugar City, ID , and later moved to Los Angeles, CA. where he worked until World War II broke out. He immediately enlisted in the army, an later attended officer candidate school, where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps. He was assigned to the 65th Signal Battalion, and worked in the 62nd Signal Radio Intelligence Co. at Two Rock Ranch near Petaluma, CA. There he served as Executive Officer in a l00 man radio intercept platoon that monitored Japanese radio transmission in the Pacific. The 62nd gathered key intelligence that hastened the end of the war and saved many lives.
During Dad's army days, he met and fell in love with brown-haired, blue-eyed Bladys Faye Cross, who worked at JC Penny in Petaluma. They were married in Reno, Washoe, NV on 7 Oct. l945 and began 38 years of happily married life together. They had four children and 29 grandchildren. In l964, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa, AZ LDS Temple. After the war, Dad served for many years as a civil service instructor and technical writer for the US Army, and US Navy. During this period He worked at Ft. Gordon, GA; Ft. McClellan, AL; Ft. Huachuca, AZ; and Ft. Mugu, CA.
Mom and Dad retired in Ventura, CA. in l968, where they loved the great weather, the blue Pacific, and the friendly people. Dad was a lifelong member and high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many responsible positions. Some of the many assignments included ward clerk, Sunday School superintendent, gospel doctrine teacher, high council, and home teacher.
