Services Held for Mark Walter Bowen
Mark Walter Bowen, son of Walter Grand and Emma Angeline Largent Bowen, was born Oct 8, 1913, in the North Grove area southeast of Hastings, on the family farm his great-uncle Alex purchased, and which has been designated a Century Farm. He attended North Grove country school and Hastings High School, where he graduated in 1932. He began farming at an early age and continued this vocation for many years. On Feb 24, 1940, he married Ruth Marjorie Pierce of Holtan, KS and to this union, one daughter, Linda , was born. In 1942, Mark and his family moved to the Pierce farm northwest of Hastings, where he continued his life's work. After losing his daughter in 1973, health problems began to develop and after a few more years he was forced to retire from farming, but took great pride in keeping his lawn and surrounding lots mowed and attractive.
On Sept 22, 1985, he suffered a stroke and spent several weeks in the hospital. After being moved to a care center, complications developed and resulted in his death on January 2, 1986, at the age of 72 years ,2 months, and 25 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Russell, Weeren, and Grigg; two sisters, Ethel and Inez Campbell and his daughter, Linda.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a brother, Ted, of Malvern; sisters, Veryl Niday of Lakewood, Co and Alma Wederquist of Apace Junction,m AZ, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, January 6, 1986, at the Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern at 10:30 am. The Reverent George Weitzel officiated.
Honorary Pall Bearers were Edwin Leu, Ronald Fickel, Ivan Durbin, Gordon Lee, Joe Hathaway, and Wendell Kelley.
Pall Bearers were Mike Osler, Jack Bowen, Max Osler, Doug Bowen, James Ford, and Orville Dunbar.
Mrs James Kelly was in charge of the registry book.
Flower ladies were Eleanor Scott and Floy Durbin.
James Kelley and Robert Moore were ushers.
Music, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "God Understand," was provided by Mrs Gary Perkins, organist and Mrs Doug Bowen, soloist.
Interment was in the North Grove Cemetery.
