Please note: Tombstone hard to read/ He may be the Husband to Eleanor Ireley. Christian would be the son of George Eckroth and Anna Mary Neier/Neier-in/Neyer/Neuer/Neigher/Neighert)

Christian Eckroth (3) was born in 1785 in Lynn Township, Northampton county, PA. and was the third child and second son of George (2) and his wife Anna Mary Neuer (Neyer)Neyer/Neier/Noyer/Nigher).

In the 1800 Census he was listed with his nine other brothers and sisters unmarried at home with his mother and father. The youngest brother Charles (4), was born in 1802.

About 1803/04 his oldest brother George (3), married Susan Catharine and probably at that time moved to Brunswick Township, Berks County (later Schuylkill County) leaving Christian (3) as the eldest son still at home.

On Thursday, May 23rd 1805 their father George (2), realizing that his death was imminent (occurred on/before the following Wednesday May 29th 1805) made an agreement with his son Christian (3), in which he agreed to sell his 160 acres to Christian (3) in return for:

a.) 800 Pounds (sterling)

b.) Yearly payments of 40 punds each to each of his other 10 children (Except for George(3) and Christian (3) named in sequence probably of birth)

c.) Support for George's minor children until they attained the age of 14 years (Namely Mary, Daniel, John, Barbara and Charles)

(Northampton County Probate file #33-2081; and Orphan's Court Book 7, page 328; Northampton County Deed Book A, pages 316-317. (WK-book page 267)

On August 15th 1805, Christian (3) made a commitment to sell his father's 160 acre tract in Lynn Township, Berks County. However, befre the sale could be completed a number of events occurred reulting in the revocation or setting aside of the terms of Christian's agreement with his father. On or befre the April 1807 session of the Northampton County Orphan's Court, the Court awarded the 160 acres tract to George (3), Christian's older brother. About 1807 Christian (3) himself married Eleanor Ireley and moved to Albany Township, Berks County where on 23rd October 1807 he sold his own individual right, title and vested interest in the property to Michael Brobst/Probst. Three days later, on 26th October 1807, Christian's widowed mother remarried to the widower Christian Henrich, Jr. in a civil ceremony later solemnized on July 31st 1808.

On March 17th 1808, George (3) sold the remainder of their father's property to Michael Brobst/Probst. (Northampton County Deed Book C3, page 334; Lehigh County Deed Book 1, page 243; Northampton County Orphan's Court, Intestate file #33-2081 and Probate Book 8, page 84; GR, page 208, "Records", Volume 11, page 200.

Based on the birthdate of their eldest child, Christian (3) married about 1807/08 to Ellen/Eleanor Ireley, born about 1788 in New York, daughter of John Ireley; and a native of Germany. She died March 7th 1849 in Ohio. (WK-book pages 267-268)

According to the biography of his eldest son, Joseph (4), Christian (3) was a shoemaker. ("History of Stark County, Ohio", Tuscarawas Township, published between 1871-1877 and contributed while Joseph, their son, was still alive, LDS GS#997.162 H2P; 1850 Census Mifflin Township, Coulumbia County). (WK-book, Page 268)

In 1810, Christian (3) was living on 20 acres of land in Albany Township, Berks County, PA as head of a family consisting of his wife, Eleanor, a son and daughter born 1808 -1810 and probably his three younger sister - Catherine Elizabeth (3), Polly (Mary) (3), and Barbara (3) all born between 1796-1800 (1810 Census, page 604). (WK-book, page 268)

Between May 16th and 26th, Christian's mother, Anna Mary and Stepfather Christian Henrich/Henry with George's minor children moved to Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA. I believe Christian (3) and his family probably accompanied them or moved there shortly after. (WK-book, page 268)

In 1820 Christian (3) and Eleanor were residing there with their family conisisting of six children- the daughter and son born 1808-1810 plus four additional sons born between 1810- 1820 (1820 Census, page 36, Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA.). By 1830 their family had grown to ten. One of the sons born 1810-1820 had probably died by 1830. (1830 Census, page 66) By 1840 the seven older children had left home or died leaving the two youngest sons and a daughter living at home. (1840 Census, page 153) (WK-book page 268)

Christian Eckroth and Eleanor Ireley Children are:

1. Joseph Eckroth (4) Was born October 28 1808 in Albany Township, Berks County, PA., The oldest child of Christian and Eleanor (Ireley) Eckroth; died on September 16th 1883 at the age of 74 Years 10 Months and 18 Days in Tuscarawas Township, Stark County, Ohio; and is buried in Row 51 between his first wife (Elizabeth) and third wife (Keziah/Giesele Kleindienst) in the Union Cemetery #3, Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio, Volume 3, February 15th 1983, Ohio Genealogical Society, Stark County, Ohio Chapter, page 138). (Wk-book 272)

2. Unidentified Daughter (4) Born 1809/10 in Albany Township, Berks County, PA oldest of two daughters of Christian and Eleanor. Probably married or died between the 1830 and 1840 Censuses. Nothing more is known with certainty about this daughter. However, in the 1850 Census, Sarah Bowman, age 4 (born about 1846) was listed in the household of Elanor Eckroth, widow of Christian (3) in Mifflin Township, Columbia County. I believe she may have been Eleanor's granddaughter by this daughter. In addition, on October 18th 1837 a 20 acre tract of land in Mifflin Township, Columbia county was conveyed to Peter Bowman in the name of Christian (4) and his wife of Stark County, Ohio which was witnessed by Hiram Eckroth(4) (Christian 3, George 2, John 1) in Stark County, Ohio. Finally, it is indicated that the Eckroth and Bowman families of Columbia county, PA are related in "Descendants of James Brown" by John Jordan Brown, 1922 (Hoenstine Lending Library, P.O. Box 208, Hollidaysburg, PA. 16648; Book #1690 copy not reviewed). Based on these circumstances, I believe that probably the oldest of the two unidentified daughters of Christian (3) and Eleanor was married by 1837/39 to Peter Bowman. (WK-book page 274-275)

3. Daniel Eckroth/Eckroat Was the third child of Christian (3) and Eleanor (Ireley). He was born between 1810-1820 in Albany Township, Berks County, PA. Daniel Eckrote (4) is only identified as their son. It ia also a possiblity he could of also been the son of Peter (4)(Christian (#), Peter (2), John 1) and Lydia. Fo the two possiblitites I favor Christian (3) and Leanor as his parents.
Daniel Eckroth (4) married about 1830, Lydia (maiden name not recovered) and amoved to Nescopeck Township, Luzerne County, PA. He was located there in 1840 as head of a householf of himself born 1810-1820, his wife 1810-1820, a daughter 1830-1835, and 3 sons born 1825-1830, 1830-1835, and 1835-1840.
By September 6th 1850, Daniel age 43, his wife age 43, adn his family had moved to Hollenbach Township, Luzerne County. (1850 Census, Luzerne County, Hollenbach township page 048). (WK-Book page 275) The eight children of Daniel and Lydia at that time were:

a.Joseph Eckroat (5) born about 1830 m. July 11th 1854 to Messiann (probably Mary Ann) Hoddenstein/ Martha Huttenstine of Dorrance Township, Luzerne County. ("Register of Marriages and Burial 1832-1872", Rev. Isaac Shellhammer, Reformed minister of Luzerne, Columbia, and Schuylkill Counties, PA. Translated March 1963 by Raymond E. Hollenbach, page 14). Joseph Eckroat/Eckrote and Martha Huttenstine had: a. Moses Albert Eckrote brn. 1866

b.Catharine Eckroat (5) born about 1832

c. Stephen Eckroat (5) born about 1834, married March 4th 1855 Louvina Buchman of Hollenbach Township, Luzerne County, PA ("Register of Marriages and Burials 1832-1872" cited above).

d. Jacob Eckroat (5) born about 1838

e. Maria Eckroat (5) born about 1841

f. Moses Eckroat (5) born about 1843

g. Nathan (5) born about 1843

h. Anna M. Eckroat (5) born about 1848

4. Peter Eckroat (4) was born Ocotber 12th 1812 in Albany township, Columbia County, PA; married about 1843 to Hannah (maiden name not recovered) born July 3rd 1824 and died 1870 in Beaver Township. both were buried from St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Harger's Church) in Beaver Township. On February 14th 1843, Christian (3) and Elanor conveyed to Peter and Hannah the tract of land, adjoining his brother's, Charles (3) land, which they had obtained on December 8th 1830 from his brother John and sister-in-law, Margaret. Peter (4) and Hannah lived on this land in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, until 1849 when they sold it to Peter's brother, Solomon (4) and moved at that time to Beaver Township. (Columbia County Deed Records, Book and Page numbers not copied, 1850 Census, page 267) (WK-book page 275).
Peter left a will when he died in 1891 (Columbia County Will Book 7, page 177) in which he named his surviving children, namely- Isaac, Francis, Henry, Jacob, and Elizabeth, Peter (4) and Hannah had a total of nine children as follows:

a. Henry Eckroat (5) born September 1846 in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA died October 19th 1915, married about 1874 Lucy (Maiden name not recovered) born August 7th 1851 died July 25th 1912 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, PA. (Obituary Noticed on W.S. Eckroat, 9 Gordon Avenue, Dallas, PA., 18612) Both are buried in St. Peter's Evangelical Church (Harger's Church) Beaver Township, Columbia County, PA. They had: Emma (6) -1875-1931; Lloyed B. (WK-book, page 276)

5. Unidentified Son Eckroat (4) The 1820 Census of Mifflin township, Columbia County, PA (Page 36) shows that at that time christian (3) and Eleanor had four sons born between 1811 and 1820. The 1830 shows (page 66) that one of these four had left home by 1830. I have not been able thus far, to identify this son. (WK-book, page 277).
However, in the 1850 Census Sarah/Mary born about 1815 Christian (3's) probable daughter-in-law was living with the widow Eleanor together probably her children and Eleanor's grandchildren namely Sarah Eckroth (5) born 1845 and Ellen (5) born 1850.
I believe that Sarah (maiden name not recovered) was the widow of this unidentified son who married her no later than 1844 and had died by the time the census was taken in 1850. (WK-book, page 277)

6. Hiram Eckroth/Eckroate born between 1815 and 1820 (1830 Census) in either Albany Township, Berks County, or Mifflin Township, Columbia county, PA. He died intestate on or before April 9th 1847 in Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio when bond was filed for Administration of his estate (Stark County Ohio Orphan's Court, Case #1166, Old Series, book B, page 243; Final Account filed March 20th 1852, Book K, pages 152-153). I have not yet been able to discover where he is buried. ("I suggest Canal Fulton's cemetery, Ohio" (Joseph)) Hiram (4) either had not yet been born or was an infant when his father and mother moved to Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA in 1816/17.
In 1831 Hiram's brother, Joseph moved to Pottsville, where he married and remained until 1834. At that time he moved to Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio.
On October 18th, 1837, Hiram (4) witnessed in Stark county, Ohio a power of attorney by his cousin Christian (4)(Christian (3), Peter (2), John 1) to sell a 20 acre tract in Mifflin Township, Columbia County PA. to Peter Bowman. Hiram probably was visiting his older brother, Joseph (4), in Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio at the time of probably carried the power of attorney with him for delivery to Peter (4) (Christian 3, peter2, John 1) when he returned to Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA. (WK-book, page 277)
On "23rd October 1838, Hiram Eckroat of Mifflin (Township) married Mary de Frane (Frane/Frehn) of Catawissa Valley by W.J. Eyer". (Newspaper: "Columbia Democrat", Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, Issue, ate and page number not copied).
Little is known about Mary Magdalen DeFrehn's family. She was born November 9th 1821, the sister probably of Isreael DeFrain/Defrehn born 1824 who was living with her and her second husband in the 1850 Census. (Bethlehem Township, Stark County, Ohio, page 216). On March 9th 1840 their oldest child was born in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA. By the date in that year on which the census was taken, Hiram and his small family had moved to Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio (1840 Census, page 152) settling near his brother Joseph (4). They became members of the Evangelical and Reformed Church (formerly German Lutheran and Reformed ) of Navarre, Bethlehem Township, Stark county, Ohio. (WK-book, page 277).
The identification of Hiram (4) as the son of Christian (3) and Eleanor is probable only, not absolutely certain. My belief that he was their son is based primarily on his association with Joseph (4), definitely their son, in Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio; His Location at the time of his marriage (Native of Mifflin Township); and the fact that his second and thrid child were named Christian and Ellen undoubtedly in honor of his parents. While not absolutely concluseive, I believe these factors are sufficient to support the probability that Hiram (4) was the son of Christian (3) and Eleanor (Ireley) Eckroat. I have no evidence to the contrary. (WK-book, page 278).
After Hiram's death in 1847, his widow, Mary Magdalen (DeFrehn) remained single until 1850. On September 29th 1850, she obtained a license and on October 22nd 1850 remarried the second cousin once removed of her deceased husband, Levi Eckroth/Eckroate (5) (Christian (4), Christian (3), John Peter (2) John (1)) of Bethlehem Township, Stark County, Ohio by whom she had five additional children. In addition to raising his own children by Mary Magdalen, Levi Eckroate (5) also raised the cildren by her former marriage to Hiram (4). (WK-book, page 278).
In 1853, Levi Eckroate/Eckroat and Mary Magdalen (Defrane) with all the children moved to Henry County, Iowa. They finally settled in Wappello County, Iowa where Levi died September 8th 1898 and Mary Magdalen (Defrane/Defrehn) died on February 8th 1901. They are buried in Burns Cemetery, Ottumwa, Iowa. (WK-book, page 278).
Hiram and Mary Magdalen (Defrane/Defrehn) had four children as follows:

a. John E. Eckroate (5) born March 9th 1840 possibly in Schuylkill County, PA (Civil War discharge papers) probably in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, he died September 16th 1904 in Mahaska County, Iowa; married July 3rd 1866 Sarah Ellen Hickman born Mary 25th 1845 and died 1928. She was the daughter of Howard and Margaret (Funk) Hickman. During the Civil War John Eckroate (5) served from August 10th 1862 to July 17th 1865 as a Private under Captain Joshua B. Wells in Company C, 33rd Regiment of Iowa Infantry. He was described as a carpenter - 5 feet 6 inches tall, light complexion and having grey eyes and dark hari. He was discharged at New Orleans, Louisianna. He and his wife Sarah had five children: Ira Eckroate (6) -1867-23 February 1895 unmarried; Etta Eckroate (6)-1869-1895; Jesse Clay Eckroate (6) -Feb. 4th 1871-June 11th 1963; Manford/Manfield Eckroate (6) - Jan. 11th 1874- April 19th 1909; Ora Eckroate (6) June 12th 1876-July 29th 1961. In 1880 he was living in Scott Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. (WK-book, page 278).

b. Christian Eckrode (5) (Hiram 4, Christian 3, George 2, John 1) born October 24th 1842. He was baptized February 26th 1843 with sponsors: John Urschel and his wife Magaretta. (Church Records of Evangelical and Reformed Church, Navarre, Ohio, 1835-1911, Fayne Harter, Grabill, Indiana, September 1967, page 9). Christian Eckroad (5) died apparently a bachelor on April 18th 1899 in Wapello Caounty, Iowa. (WK-book, page 278)

c. Helena/Ellen/Eleanor Eckrode (5) (Hiram 4, Christian 3, George 2, John 1) "born Decemeber 28th 1844, baptized May 18th 1845, Sponsors: Daniel and Sara Christman" (Evangelical and Reformed Church Records; op cit. above, page 13) died July 16th 1910 in Mahaska County, Iowa. Married about 1866 Peter Huffman and had at least two children: Susan B. Huffman -1869 and Francis Huffman- March 29th 1875. (WK-book, page 278).

d. Hiram Eckroat (5) (Hiram 4, Christian 3, George 2, John 1) born January 12th 1847, at about the time of his father's death, died a bachelor in Mahaska County, Iowa March 18th/ November 1864. He is buried in the third row on the West side of the fence of Butler Cemetery, Scott Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. (LDS GS #985387). (WK-book, page 278).

7. Unidentified Daughter Eckroth (4) (Christian 3, George 2, John 1) The 1830 Census of Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA (page 66) shows that Christian (3) and Eleanor had a second daughter born between 1821 and 1825. In the 1840 Census (page 153) she was still at home aparently unmarried. She probably married or died between 1840 and 1850. I have not been able to identify this daughter (WK-book, page 279).

8. John Eckroth (4) (Christian 3, George 2, John 1) was born about 1822 and is only tentatively identified as the child of Christian (3) and Eleanor. It is possible that he may have been the son of Peter (4) (Christian 3, Peter 2, John 1). In 1850 a probable brother or nephew Peter born 1836 was living with John in Center Township. On/ about 1845 John (4) a boatman by occupation, had married Julia A. (maiden name not recovered but, possibly Kercher) born about 1823. As of the 1850 Census (page 165) they had: Dorothy A. Eckroate (5) born about 1846. When John (4) died he left a will naming his wife Julia and two other children- Charles and Catharine. (LDS GS #954840, page 252, date not copied). I have no further data on John (4).

9. Solomon Eckroth (4) (Christian 3, George 2, John 1) born about 1826 in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA (1850 Census, page 257) was living at home with his widowed mother as a laborer, adjacent to his uncle Charles' land in 1850. In 1849 his brother, Peter (4) had conveyed to Solomon (4) the tract of land adjoining that of charles (Land Records, Columbia County Deed Book and page # not copied). On November 5th 1852, Solomon obtained additional land from Daniel Nungesser/Nungene (Deed Book 13, page 204). I have nothing further on Solomon other than the possibility that by October 21st 1875 he may have moved to Riverside, Northumberland County, PA. where on that date land was conveyed from Daniel to a Soloon Eckroth. (WK-book, page 279).

10. David Eckroth (4) (Christian 3, George 2, John 1) born about 1829 in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA was living at home in 1850 with his widowed mother, sister-in-law Sarah/May, and her children and his older brother Solomon (4). I have nothing further on David (4) (WK-book, page 279)

They had: Emma (6) -1875-1931; Lloyed B. e. Elizabeth Eckroat (5) born in Beaver Township, Columbia county, PA married Josiah Huffman/Hoffman and lived at Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, PA.

f. Jacob Eckroat (5) born in Beaver Township, Columbia County, PA married, lived Catawissa Township, Columbia County, and had : Al Eckroat (6), Boyd Eckroat (6), Samuel Eckroat (6), Charles Eckroat (6), and Helen Eckroat (6) (R.L. Eckroat, 48 Judy Lane, Harrisburg, PA. 17112

g. Harry Eckroat (5) born 1861 in Beaver Townshiop, Columbia county (Baptismal records, William S. Eckroat, 9 Gordon Avenue, Dallas, PA. 18612).

h. Harriett Eckroat (5) born 1864 in Beaver Township, Columbia County, PA (Baptismal Records, William S. Eckroat, 9 Gordon Ave, Dallas, PA. 18612).

i. Isaac Eckroat (5) born about 1864 in Mainville, Columbia county died 1935 in Shenandoah, West Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, PA. (Obiturary, W.S. Eckroat, Dallas, PA, 18612). He married Mary Alice Kline/Klein born 1861 and died 1929 in Shenandoah. They had six children: - Jennie Eckroat(6) married William Haines; William S.
