Henry Wagman's grave had been unknown for many years because it was mistakenly recorded as Henry Van Wegenen in 1914 by J.W.Poucher,MD., Helen Van Kleeck and Helen W. Reynolds. See "Old Gravestones of Dutchess County". In 1914, it stated that,"the Van Wegenen Ground has one stone remaining in a family enclosure where, originally (within the memory of one now living), there were many." In 2013 it was learned that one of those was a 2 year old grandson named Adrian. Also it may be that his first wife Mary Wight or Waite is buried here. The footstone pictured at right was rediscovered buried beneath the headstone in 2013.
He was born 1730 in Zurich and came to NYS in 1760 with a sister. When he emigrated, Swiss law permitted no money to leave the country. Apparently he was given money by friends either on leaving or arriving because he was able to purchase land in Dutchess County. A large number of descendants now claim ancestry to him. Records state that his first wife (my ancestor) was of German origin. However at his second marriage at Hopewell Dutch Church to Effie Emigh he is listed as Heinrick Wagman (Wyckman) widower of Mary Wight.
