Nancy Armstrong was born 6 April 1809 to Robert and Nancy (Green) Armstrong in White County, Tennessee. She married Henry McHenry in Morgan County, Illinois, 23 June 1833. They settled down in a place called Robinson's Hill (now in Cass County, IL). The couple had 10 children. Nancy--and through her, her husband as well--were known to be on friendly terms with Abraham Lincoln. (Lincoln successfully defended her nephew Duff Armstrong in a well known murder trial.) A family legend holds that Lincoln himself named their first-born daughter Parthena Jane on a visit to the McHenrys.
Parthena was not an unusual name at the time.
