Ben was born when his mother and sisters accompanied Louis on the emigrant road of the North Platte, to buy stock and surplus groceries. Louis wrote, on the scrap of paper that served as the children's birth record, that Ben was born "thirty miles from Fort Laramie on the North Platte". Ben Lessert, Jr. and Lucille, the daughter of David Cottier were married on October 2, 1884 and took up residence immediately. The water-abundant land, like an insertion ribbon between the sandhills and the harder arid ground, seemed ideal for cattle and horses. Young Ben needed little urging from his father to settle on Stinking Water Creek. They had 5 sons, David, Richard, Walter, Egan and Hobart and a daughter Emily Agnes.
