Emily Agnes Lessert was the first daughter born to Benjamin C Lessert and Lucille Cottier, mixed blood Native Americans living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She had four elder brothers, David born 22 Apr 1887, Richard born 27 Oct 1888, Walter Garfield born 28 Dec 1890 and Eagan born 15 Sep 1894. The 1910 Federal Census lists Emily as 1/4 Oglala Sioux. For unknown reasons Emily was the last child born in the family. By the 1913 US Pine Ridge Oglala Census her brothers are shown living as heads of household separately from their parents while Emily, almost 13, is shown living with her mother and father, which is the case in all the Native American Rolls for Pine Ridge until June of 1919 because her father died 2 1/2 weeks after the 1918 Pine Ridge Census. Emily and her mother Lucy are shown on the 1919 and 1920 Pine Ridge records together as Head of Household and Daughter. In April of 1932 Emily Lessert is on the Pine Ridge Indian Roll as the wife to John Artichoker with three children, Lucille Sylvia born October 10, 1920, Benjamin David born October 12, 1926 and John Hobart born January 17, 1930. Emily is buried at the National Cemetery in the Black Hills, South Dakota as the wife of a veteran. Social Security records show her last know address as 57555 Mission, Todd, South Dakota.
