"Find A Grave contributor Sam adds: Date / place of birth: 1706 / Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts place of death: Canaan, Litchfield, Connecticut"
The above was on the memorial when it was transferred to me, probably in Aug 2020. I am only now, July 2022, searching for records and getting some bio notes written for Jeremiah who is likely my 6th Great Grandfather (to be confirmed).
Based on Jeremiah's grave marker showing he was 75 years old when he died and a death date of 9 July 1781, the year of birth must be either 1705 or 1706 depending on the month of Jeremiah's birth.
I have found no birth record for Jeremiah, but did locate a baptismal record in "Massachusetts Town & Vital Records 1630 - 1988 / Groton". This record shows a baptismal date, NOT a birth date, and this date is 5 Oct 1707, making it clear the date entered for Jeremiah's birth is actually his baptism. Unfortunately, I do not know the typical interval between birth and baptism for this time period in Massachusetts. But it seems highly unlikely it would be exactly one or two years after his birth. I have therefor removed the day and month (5 Oct) for his birth. For now, I will use only the year 1706 for Jeremiah's birth which should certainly be a good approximation.
In the "US Hale Collection of Headstone Inscriptions, Vol 36", it is noted Jeremiah was a "Veteran". It seems he would have been too old to fight in the American Revolution, so I'm unsure what war he may have served in, will research.
Jeremiah married Olive Wheeler on 2 Feb 1729 in Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticut, Olive's home town, this per a Town Record for Plainfield.
Jeremiah died 9 July 1781 in Connecticut per the "Connecticut Deaths & Burials Index 1650 - 1934". This date matches the date on his grave marker (very legible).
I am honored to document even this limited biography of my Great Grandfather from 1700s New England and hope to add to it as I research the Lawrence line.
